Brace Yourself: Fall Crowds Are Coming

You want to propose in the Smokies when the leaves are at peak color? So does everybody else.

And unless you plan carefully, your private mountain proposal may come with 200 tourists, three motorcycles, a tour bus, and somebody’s toddler having a meltdown ten feet away.

Fall in the Smokies is gorgeous. The mountains turn red, gold, and orange, the air gets crisp, and the views are spectacular.

But peak foliage also means peak crowds.

The road from Gatlinburg toward Newfound Gap and Kuwohi can become one long parade of leaf-peepers. Parking gets…creative.

And by “creative,” I mean people leave cars along roadsides where parking is clearly forbidden.

The rangers are not impressed by creativity.

You may come back to a ticket—or one of those warning stickers people tell me is remarkably difficult to remove and leaves behind a lovely souvenir of adhesive residue.

Romantic.

And About That Private Mountain Proposal…

Popular overlooks can be packed.

Newfound Gap? Beautiful.

Also possibly filled with cars, families, motorcycles, hikers, and somebody standing exactly where you imagined dropping to one knee.

Cades Cove has its own problem: during busy periods, signs warn that traveling the 11-mile loop can take three to five hours.

That matters when you're coordinating a photographer, good light, a specific location, and one woman who hopefully has no idea why you're suddenly obsessed with the schedule.

So should you avoid the Smokies in fall?

Absolutely not.

You just need a plan.

This Is Where Local Knowledge Matters

Last fall, I worked with a gentleman who loved the mountain views at Newfound Gap.

The problem?

It was a zoo.

So I sent him a couple of miles farther down the road to another overlook I knew.

When we arrived, nobody was there.

No crowd. No strangers wandering into the photographs. No audience waiting for him to get down on one knee.

Just the two of them, the mountains, and a quiet fall late afternoon.

The mood was sublime.

And she said yes.

Far From the Madding Crowd

This is one of the reasons you work with someone who photographs proposals here regularly.

I scout. I watch the light. I pay attention to parking and traffic. I keep backup locations in mind. And I am always looking for places that give you the beauty of the Smokies without making your proposal feel like the halftime show at Neyland Stadium*.

Sometimes the perfect proposal spot isn't the famous overlook everybody found on Google.

Sometimes it's two miles farther down the road.

Fall crowds are coming.

Brace yourself.

Or better yet, hire someone who knows where to get away from them.

*If you have to ask why there is a reference to Neyland Stadium . . .

Just kidding - it’s okay if you don’t know that East Tennessee is the home of the University of Tennessee Vols who play football at Neyland Stadium. Let me help you deal with the madness of Fall in the Smokies!
